Loy Krathong, que se traduce como “flotar una canasta”, es una antigua tradición con raíces en Sukhothai. El propósito del festival es rendir homenaje a la diosa del agua, Phra Mae Khongkha, y pedir perdón por cualquier daño causado a ella durante el año. Los participantes lanzan al agua pequeños flotadores llamados krathongs, bellamente decorados, en ríos, canales y lagos.

Estos krathongs están hechos de hojas de plátano y flores, y a menudo contienen una vela, tres varitas de incienso y una pequeña moneda. A medida que el krathong se aleja flotando, simboliza el dejar ir los rencores, los pensamientos negativos y la mala suerte.
